Abstract

A new species of Phymaturus belonging to the P. palluma group is described. This new taxon was collected in Sierra del Nevado and Payunia, Mendoza Province, Argentina. The new Phymaturus exhibit an unique dorsal pattern for the genus formed by a thick dark reticulation over light brown or gray background coloration. Light yellow color is present on flanks and over the dorsal surface of tail and in most of females a coupled series of dark ocelli is present. This species distinctly lack a melanic cover over the head as all other members of the group. Characters of squamation different in this taxon are the presence in most individuals of a rostral scale divided and the high number of scales around midbody. Those characters of pattern and lepidosis described above make different this new Phymaturus from all other species.
